Kala Bhavana was founded in 1919. It grew from Rabindranath Tagore's erlier and more informal efforts at quickening the Inian are scene and later as his efforts took the shape of Visva Bharati 1921, Kala Bhavana became one of its core faculties and the first department fine arts in an Indian university. In the next two decades it became the nucleus of the new art movement in pre-independent India and acquired great national importance.
Having come on the crest of the wave of Indian artistic renaissance initiated by Rabindranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore, right from the outset Kala Bhavana was planned to be different from a conventional art school. Here art education was visualised not as a progremme for imparting technical skills but as an exploration of visual communication, visual arts were not seen in isolation but as part of a larger cultural spectrum, and culture was perceived as a factor enhancing the quality of life, the renewal of which depends on the renewal of creativity.
Tagore invited noted painter Nandalal Bose, and disciple of Abanindranath Tagore, the founder of Bengal school of art movement, to become first prinicpal of the institution. In the coming years stalwarts like Benode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij became associated with college, and in time gave a new direction not just to the institution but also to the modern Indian painting.[2] K.G. Subramanyan, Somnath Hore, and Dinkar Kowshik were among their distinguished successors. Present head of the institution is the noted art historian and curator, R. Siva Kumar, who has been in the art history faculty since 1981
In 2011, to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Rabindra Chitravali was released, the four-volume set covered masters' painting oeuvre consisting of 1,600 paintings, from Rabindra Bhavan (another institution of the university) and Kala Bhavan collection, along with 200 paintings fro other institutions across India.
Through the last ten decades Kala Bhavana has grown into an educational center of marked creativity and liveliness, where traditional and modern, eastern and western cultural trends get into a meaningful relationship.
Today it is knows as a distinguished center for visual art training and research in South Asia. Its academic programme is broad and thus successfully introduces the students to all the necessary traditional and modern skills through studio courses and to a knowledge of art history and aesthetics through lectures, discussions, through various group activities and a work atmosphere that combines informality withh personal commitment. It seeks to develop in a student the spirit of personal initiative, creativity, inner discipline and awareness of his cultural environment.
Besides this the inter-disciplinary character of Visva Bharati, its personalized campus and heavy calender of cultural activities tend to give a receptive student an educational exposure of remarkable breath and depth.
In keeping with its early ideals, Kala Bhavana is still trying to look beyond academics and produce young artists with a broad perspective and understanding, and imparting to them a broad range of skills to help them in various fields of creativity.
It involves studnts in divergent activities as designing and decorating its festivals or the stage and costumes of its dramas and it has a busy calendar of events every year, which includes exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations by visiting artists and craftsmen, picnics, camp-fires, study tours and Nandan Mela, the annual art fair that serves as an effective contact students and the community.
The murals and the environmental projects jointly undertaken by the staffs and students is another outstanding feature, the cumulative impact of which has turned the campus into a veritable open air museum of Modern Indian Art. The overall effort is to build the students’ knowledge, creativity and vision in the midst of a conducive environment rich with past heritage and traditions of excellence.
As a premier art institute in Indian Kala Bhavana continues to draw its students from all over the country, despite the fact that now there are art colleges in every state. Besides the Indian students, it regularly attracts students from many countries all around the world. The mix of students together with its educational programme and work environment makes it a place where cultureal interaction comes naturally and the motto of Visva Bharati is a living reality.
