At the 60th National Film Awards, she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Thanichalla Njan After making her debut in the 1983 film Manju directed by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Kalpana went on to star in several critically acclaimed films and her portrayals as a comedienne were appreciated by critics. Her Tamil debut was through the 1985 released successful film Chinna Veedu opposite K. Bhagyaraj. Her other memorable films include Sathi Leelavathi (1995) and Kaliveedu (1996).
Kalpana is the sister of film actresses Urvashi and Kalaranjini. Kalpana Priyadarshini, better known by her stage name Kalpana, entered the film industry wanting to work as a heroine. However, she ended up doing comedy. Kalpana has strayed into reality shows and says she thoroughly enjoys them. She recently performed a music album with Usha Uthup. She has published her memoirs, Njan Kalpana.
Meenakshi, also known as Sharmilee or Sharmili, is a South Indian actress. She made her debut in Tamil cinema before transitioning to Malayalam films. The Kerala Film Critics Association named her their 2005 debutante artist. In all of her Tamil-language films, she was credited as Sharmilee. In Malayalam, she rechristened herself as Meenakshi, the character she played in Kakkakarumbam.
Meenakshi graduated in Maths from the Stella Maris College in Chennai and received a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) in India. While in school, she received several acting offers, which she rejected so that she could concentrate on her studies. She did modelling and later hosted a popular phone-in programme, Kasumele on Jaya TV.[5] After graduation, she agreed to appear in the Tamil film Aasai Aasaiyai. She followed that role with a Telugu film, Tarak, before returning to Tamil with Anbe Anbe, in which she starred alongside Shaam.
In 2004, Meenakshi began acting in Malayalam films. She told an interviewer that "I love to act in more Malayalam films as the characters here have depth and the heroines have much more to do than just look good."Although she completed work on Kakkakarumban first, her second Malayalam film, horror movie Vellinakshathram, was the first to be released. She was named the 2005 best debutante artist by the Kerala Film Critics Association for her work in Kakkakarumban.
