South Indian Actress Priyamani Biography

Priyamani was born on 4 June 1984 into a Palakkad Iyer family and was raised in Bangalore. She has travelled extensively in the South Indian starts and is thus fluent in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. Priyamani started modeling and appeared in several print adverts and TV commercials. Priyamani is the cousin of famed bollywood actress Vidya Balan who has starred in successful films like ‘Parineeta’, ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, ‘Bhul Bhulaiya’, ‘Heyy Babyy’ and ‘Paa’. Priyamani is presently pursuing her graduation with majors in Psychology.

Priyamani made her acting debut in the Telugu film ‘Evare Atagaadu’ alongside Vallabha, Jaya Sheel and K.Viswanath. However the film failed to do well, both commercially as well as critically and Priyamani went unnoticed. Her next film was a Tamil movie titled ‘Kangalal Kaidhu Sei’ directed by Bharathiraja. ‘Kangalal Kaidhu Sei’ starred Vaseegaran and Priyamani as the lead pair; though the film could not do very well, Priyamani won positive reviews for her on screen presence.

Priyamani was next seen in Vinayan’s Malayalam film ‘Satyam’ opposite Prithiviraj. Priyamani was paired opposite Dhanush in Balu Mahendra’s ‘Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam’ and won accolades for her performance. Commercial success eluded her till she appeared in the 2006 release ‘Pellaina Kothalo’ opposite Jagapathi Babu. ‘Pellaina Kothalo’ was a huge box office success and Priyamani soon became one of the most popular tollywood actresses.

Priyamani’s breakthrough performance was seen in the 2007 release award winning Tamil blockbuster film ‘Paruthiveeran’ directed by Ameer Sultan. ‘Paruthiveeran’ starred karthik Sivakumar, Priyamani, Ponvannan, Saravanan and Kanja Karuppu in significant roles. The film revolved around the bequest of Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 in Tamilnadu. The film earned huge critical acclaim and became a box office success by successfully running for more than a year in theatres. The film won the Netpac Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film also won two National Awards - Silver Lotus Award - Best Actress for Priyamani and Silver Lotus Award - Best Editing for Raja Mohammed. Priyamani won four Best Actress Awards for her exemplary performance in ‘Paruthiveeran’ including the National Award, Filmfare Award, Tamil Nadu State Film Award and Vijay Award.

Priyamani’s next two films- Telugu social fantasy ‘Yamadonga’ opposite Jr. NTR and Boopathy Pandian’s Tamil film ‘Malaikottai’ opposite Vishal turned to be mega hits and did extremely well at the box office. Priyamani bowled over the critics as well as audiences with her pioneering performance in the Malayalam romantic drama ‘Thirakkatha’, supposed to be based on the life of late actress Srividya.

Her forthcoming films include the Tamil film ‘Raavanan’ directed by Mani Ratnam. The film stars eminent actors like Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Prithiviraj. She is also starring in the much awaited Hindi film ‘Raavan’, which is the remake of Tamil film ‘Raavanan’. The hindi version stars Vikram, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Govindo, among others.

Priyamani will also be seen playing the female lead in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rakta Charitra’ alongside Surya Sivakumar and Vivek Oberoi. The film is being made in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
